You have to manage cash flow. Talking money is the key.

Perhaps the greatest hurdle for any business owner is to be able to talk comfortably about money with vendors, customers and even employees. It's a topic that sends the heart racing and creates needless stress.

Are you independently wealthy? Did you start your business from lottery winnings? Or your Google profit shares? Probably not...so the financial health of your livelihood is at stake with every conversation about money.

Every single business operates from a budget. Money pays the bills, and helps your organization grow. Before your next anxiety attack, consider these three reasons why you have to learn to talk about money as a business owner.

1. It Shows Confidence

It's honest. And, frankly, it shows that you are confident. When the time comes to talk about pricing, instead of avoiding the issue, a successful business person says, "I know you're wondering what this will cost. Let me show you..." How you explain depends on your business: a price range, a fee-for-service, or a breakdown of each expense. The fact is, you are candid about the charges.

2. It Shows You have listened

Customer satisfaction always relies on the feeling of being understood. When a customer feels "heard," he or she trusts you. And trust is the solid foundation of customer loyalty. With trust, you can educate your customer on your business and its value. The costs will easily be recognized and accepted: "Now that I understand your needs, let me explain the pricing...

3. It's a win-win

When discussing money with a customer (or anyone) you must acknowledge that you are both seeking a positive outcome. You are looking for a sale or a service; the customer wants a different kind of success. The customer wants a more efficient process, or a better reputation, or the latest technology. When you can focus on the customer's need, you can present costs in terms of how your business will make a difference. "Based on your budget, here is what we can do to help you meet your goals..."

Money--income--is essential to your business. Learning to discuss it with clarity will improve communications with your customers and put them at ease. Don't hesitate to be honest when the topic comes up. When everyone is at ease, trust builds...and your business will grow as a result.
