Old school best practices of dealing with your own spheres of influence still work. You have to sell to your friends and relatives because most strangers won't tak to you! Social networking has existed since the horse and buggie days and social media enhanced by the internet and technology is simply a new way to extend your reach and frequency of keeping in touch with old and new friends. After all, what are friends for!

First we need to be the best we can be. There is no sense in asking people to help promote us if we are not. Secondly promotion is a geometric process and not a linear process. The people we know the best will know people we do not know. Lastly, be creative. Go where the people are: restaurants, doctor's office waiting rooms, banks, supermarkets, superiorly designed websites that will show up in Google searches... MBWA. (managing by wandering around) and AOMA (all out massive action)
