Technology has created a myriad of apps designed to increase your productivity at any cost. While many of these apps--such as Wunderlist, Todoist, and Any.do--have proven to be effective for people who have too much to do, they aren't the hidden ingredient to becoming more productive. Technology helps, but the hidden ingredient wins.
What is the hidden ingredient to a more productive you?
It's focus.
Your brain is the executive center in your body--it helps you resolve conflicts and manage your priorities. I refer to focus as hidden because we normally don't pay attention to it--we rarely even notice it's there. Focus is a mental muscle--you need to exercise it regularly for it to become stronger, just like going to the gym to get that six-pack you've always wanted. You have to remain committed to your exercise routine to develop it, to keep it, and to enhance it.
It takes awareness to realize when you get distracted, and mental effort to get back to re-focusing. With time and effort, focusing will get easier for you.
Here are three things that can help you focus and become more productive--without a smartphone app.
1. Concentrate on the right things.
Focus implies concentrating on something for longer periods of time. Identify two of your most important tasks and give them your full attention. It may be calling a few clients and updating your sales report. As Stephen Covey advises, "Begin with the end in mind."
2. Don't get discouraged if you lose focus during your first attempts.
Focus is not something you develop instantly. Remember--focus is like a mental muscle, you have to exercise it to make it strong. Make a commitment to give your chosen tasks your best effort, enjoy the process, and be proud of yourself as you improve.
3. Being in the right environment is key to developing focus--and to staying focused.
Distractions are everywhere. You have control over some distractions--like resisting the urge to check your cell phone frequently--but you have little or no control over people constantly stopping by your office to talk about last night's events.
Focus should bring excellence to your life, not complexity. The ability to focus is a key skill for anyone who wants to achieve success. It's particularly important for leaders whose goal is to genuinely influence and inspire others. Exercise your own focus muscles and watch yourself improve in a variety of different ways.
