Ultimately, Craig, it can be a crapshoot. I have been in dealers where one week, the ads we run have brought but a few candidates to be interviewed. The very next week, an explosion. Im my opinion, the internet ad should only be the beginning. AOMA. All Out Massive Action. First things first, changing the perceptioin of who a salesperson is. This starts with ad content. Secondly, as a trainer, we need to get our butts out, locally, and let everyone know we are hiring. Lastly, Don't lie to the potential salespeople. If they are not qualified, then they are not qualified. This is not one size fits all. Now, as far as training is concerned, I would leave it to the professionals. Saying the information and actually imparting the information are two different things. How much does it cost the dealer to take a manager off the floor to "train" the salesforce. And how much is actually accomplished? Unfortunately many dealers only look at the cost and not the value. Just my opinion.
