Email can make you smarter, stronger and more successful.

If ever there were a classic love/hate relationship, it's the way most people interact with email. We love the convenience and how email keeps us connected. But we hate the intrusion and the relentlessness of receiving an unending string of messages.
Born in 1971, email's not going away anytime soon. So it's time to embrace the old dog and love it for what it is: messy, smelly, but still loveable. Here are five reasons to embrace email, and to make it work for you:
1. Our love for email is much stronger than our hate. According to a survey by MarketingSherpa, 72% of Americans say email is how they want to communicate with companies they do business with. People may be overloaded, but they still welcome your message--if it's relevant and useful to them.
2. The best email is very, very good. And you have the power to make email great. Kara Trivunovic, writing in Email Insider, quotes her old boss who espouses the 40/40/20 Rule of Email Marketing. Her boss, Tricia Pridemore, believes "that 40% of (an email) program's success was driven by delivering someone the right message; 40% was driven by getting the message to them at the right time; and 20% was determined by the creative . . . (You) could write your offer on a cocktail napkin, in lipstick--and as long as you handed it to the right person at the right time, you had an 80% chance of converting." Such a simple premise, but so useful for thinking about the best way to develop emails that will make an impact.
3. Email is personal. Despite the fact that we receive many emails from people we don't know, the underlying premise of email is that it's a message from you to me, or from me to you. So the more directly relevant email is to a person's needs, the more value it has.
4. The more succinct you are, the more effectively you'll communicate. The Marketing Sherpa study asked consumers for their suggestions about improving email. Three out of 10 said they'd like to see shorter, more personalized emails. Here's what they meant: "Make it meaningful and don't waste my time."
5. Emails are easy to delete. It's true that the disposable nature of email can be a problem--people spend only two seconds looking at the subject line and the sender before deciding whether to delete, open or save for later. But the fact that email lives in the moment is actually a good thing. I received your message, I read it quickly, I got it. And then I disposed of it, without fuss or muss.
Embrace email--and use it for what it does best--and you can be smarter, stronger and more successful. Easy, right?
