Why is it that many people in the business world, not just limited to the auto industry, are compelled to lie to customers, vendors, people they have relationships with, and it is allowed?

I have had to back peddle myself and the dealership through seas and oceas of lies when an issue is escalated to management!  Sometimes, I find folks lie because they no longer know how to tell the truth, even when the truth would have been an easier route!

This continues to baffle me and I was wondering if many others experience this trait in the business world!  Now my question:  What measures can we take to make it stop?

Don't have time for it. What are the rules and penalt for breaking the rules. If a salesman promised something and it is not on a WE OWE We warn them the first time. The second time we deduct it from there pay. After a few behind closed conversations they are gone.
You can't expect people to do something you don't or won't do as the manager.
They will follow what you do and how you talk to them.

No telling lies, cheating, stealing and cursing. Period. The strongest tree bends with the wind. If it doesn't it breaks. Warn them, make them pay and fire when needed.
Everyone lets a bad word come out every now and then. A dealer friend told me just because most dealerships accept cursing as a way of life doesn't mean I have to. Harry fines everyone a dollar when a bad word slips. That is in the whole dealership and not just the sales department. The money goes in a pot for the party at the end of the year. It's just a business and nothing personal.
Thanks for your response Fran! And of course, as always, spot on! Zero Tolerance should be the way... If you cannot act professional in a professional environment at all times, (not just when there is a customer present), then there is the door!
