R U a Noun or Verb Christian?
What is your faith like...is it a noun, a thing, or a verb, something in action to which others might point and remark there is something "different" about you.
This is not an academic exercise. There is nothing that Jesus preached or His apostles wrote about faith and following Christ that is not verb-oriented. Yes, faith itself is a noun, but as James says, faith without works is dead. Please do not read this to mean works = salvation. Scripture is very clear that salvation is by faith alone.
So, what do we mean by being a Verb Christian? Is it attending church or tithing or donating time and money to charity...or taking care of an elder relative? These are all good things we all should do, if presented with the opportunity. Church attendance by itself simply says the individual attends church -- it reveals nothing about their changed heart, their obedience to Christ's commands or their submission of their ego/themselves/stuff/TV/sport/business to God and to others (especially their spouse).

If you are in the retail end of our business, there are many challenges that you must face everyday. With the hours we keep, it can be difficult to find time to spend in the Word, and in prayer. If you are a husband and father, as I am, you are also charged with leading your family and teaching your children the ways of the Lord.
I pray and struggle with this often and have been meditating on the following scriptures to help motivate me and hold me accountable.
The first is about the work that God has blessed me with. In my mind I could love him and spend more time with him if I only worked a job that did not require so many hours. He has me right where I am supposed to be and He tells me: You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. Deut. 5:33
The 2nd verse speaks to my time with Him and leading my family well. All at once, this one is a warm blanket to my soul and a stinging arrow that pierces my heart: 4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. Deut. 6:4-9

Joe-- Jim is right. There are no coincidences. What you are experiencing is the work of the Holy Spirit. Keller is a great preacher. Follow the teachings of the great reformed theologians like Luther, Calvin, Edwards (old school) or current preachers like Keller, John Piper, RC Sproul, Mark Driscoll or my pastor Matt Chandler.
If you are a deep thinker, the teaching of these greats will stir up your affections for God and feed your intellect. I always find their teachings convicting and challenging. But beware, there is no sugar coating. Sin is sin, Hell is real and these men teach the Word of God without worrying about if you will be offended.
If you are not a member of a church, find a vibrant, reformed congregation near you and attend. Pray about membership, and where the Lord leads you, become a member. Church attendance is important. Church membership is equally as important.

I am so excited to see a Christian Group on this site! I had a moment of peace tonight as I was in prayer and felt a message of "Big things are about to happen" Of course I am thinking business growth because I have many irons in the fire but maybe God has other plans...like new Christian connections.

Don't know if it was just a coincedence or not Jim but last night after work and the gym I watched a couple hours of DVD on some solid teaching on living out the Christian life by Timothy Keller (Redeemer Presb Church, NYC). Really seemed to lift my spirit and reinforce the fact that I NEED to be in fellowship and community with other believers if I want to have any chance of walking in faith and obedience to my Lord! This is something I've not been a part of for a long time.

Thank you, Jim, for your wonderful message about intimately knowing and actively pursing Christ.
I have struggled with sin, worry, frustration, anxiety, work obsessiveness, lust, etc. over the years, especially before I was reborn. Even in this challenging economy, my praise report is that the Lord has lifted off my shoulders all those things that had dragged me down and replaced it with a free, clean spirit that seeks to honor him in all I do daily. As we all know, Satan is a roving lion seeking to put into our heads ideas and visions that do NOT honor God. I have to battle Satan daily to make sure he doesn't get a foot hold in my thoughts. I want to encourage everyone, that with the power of prayer and reading His word, God can build each of us into strong pillars that shine God's love, light, hope and strength to those around us. Having the fruit of the spirit at our core every day is a wonderful way to live. Praise the Lord!

We are baptized in the Holy Spirit upon acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, but how do YOU release the power of the Holy Spirit in your life? Are you a believer who received this gift but has left it unwrapped and unused in a closet of your heart?
