In the movie Moneyball the General Manager of the Oakland Athletics was faced with a dilemma: His star players were leaving, going to other richer organizations that could pay them more money. Using the old ways of doing business his team was bound to lose--they couldn't compete dollar for dollar with the richer clubs. The old way wasn't going to work for a team with a lesser amount of money.
Even those teams with money were paying millions of dollars per win--as much as 3 million--an…

My first car which I purchased was a 1977 White 4-Speed Toyota Corolla. It wasn’t the nicest looking vehicle anyone has ever seen. As a matter of fact, it was what people today would call a “hoopty” or “jalopy”. As soon as I made the purchase, I headed over to AutoZone to cover the steering column, replace the side mirrors, buy seat covers, and styled it up with the double windshield blades. My taste in style has since changed. It was ugly to say the least, but it was mine!
The…

As the sun rises and your day is about to start, you have a serious decision to make. The decision you have to make right now is; How is this day going to go? That's right, how is your day going to go? Be forewarned that you may need to remake this decision multiple times during the day.
Uh... Dave, can we take a look at something relevant to the car business and not get all hung up on this motivational crap?
Sure! No problem, I'm happy to do that for…

With the start of the Memorial Day weekend, you need to remind your staff to be vigilant in watching the lots and be aware that the "scam" artists are all to aware of the hyperactivity on dealership lots. Everyone needs to verify that the people they are with are who they say they are. DL's are a must do to the higher than normal risk associated with traditional big sale weekends. Every year during a "long" weekend, I hear stories in the press or through the "networks" about someone from…

A 3 year old has around 900 words in his vocabulary; over the next 15+ years a child’s word bank will explode to an average capacity of 20,000 words. As a parent, it would be impossible to teach your toddler everything you have learned in life in 7 short days, yet dealerships are guilty of cramming thousands of hours of experiential knowledge into a week long boot…

For more than 100 years, PepsiCo.and Coca-Cola have waged one of the fiercest corporate brand wars in the history of marketing. The two soft drink companies have long vied for the top spot in the global market for brown, fizzy, sugar water. Some consumers claim they can taste a difference between the two colas (and maybe they can), while others see soda as a commodity (and simply buy the…

The buzz is very positive. The tech sites that have turned Yahoo into a red-headed punching bag for the last 3 years are nearly-universally saying this is a win for the beleagured tech giant. Despite fading from prominence, Yahoo has something sexy and modern that may bring them back to prominence.
This isn't a declaration that comes lightly. I've been…

Have you ever blown up a balloon and then just let it go and listen to the sound it makes? If you have children or a crazy Uncle Lenny, chances are you've heard this noise before. It is so distinctive that once you've heard it, you are not likely to forget it the rest of your life.
I've heard this same noise in my head many times in the service drive right after an Advisor says something he or she shouldn't have. In our business there are many things that must happen to make sure that…

Why is making a profit a bad thing? I actually have no idea as to the answer to this question. When I first git into the car business some 21 years ago that’s the first thing that I was trained on. These days big government is wanting to run everything and Capitalism is considered a vulgar word. Slowly but surely big government is wanting to destroy the “American Dream.” In the car business it started with “Cash for Clunkers.” You know, when you traded in your junk car an Uncle Sam…

This is one of the major problems that consumers find themselves in when they purchase an automobile. Buying a vehicle with no money down. Believe it or not, this is the worst thing a consumer can do when they make a big ticket purchase. Why? You see when you buy a vehicle with no money down a consumer not only pays a higher interest rate, the’re also upside down on their new vehicle. In order to keep this from happening you want to at least put 10 to 12% down. That way you are not…
