It's Monday morning and I'm getting ready for a new adventure. While I'll still be working with dealers to help them staff up and train, I'll be responsible for marketing and delivering on my own. With the market still not where it needs to be and many dealers believing they still do everything right, this is a scary endeavor. How can one possibly compete with companies that have been around for a while? How can a "new kid" (even as old as I am), possibly go up against the old…

Are you still debating whether to employ text messaging in your eLead response process? This story may get you off the fence.
One day a couple weeks ago, as I do most days, I was sitting in a General Manager’s office reviewing his store’s recent mystery shop.
When I told him the Lead Response Time (LRT) was a disappointing 5 hours 36 minutes he immediately went to his CRM to verify. To my surprise, the CRM said the response time was 41…

I'm posting an email that my friend Shaun Kniffin (from the Germain Group) sent earlier today. He's an avid bicycle rider and will be participating in a 100 mile trek created to raise money to help in the fight to end cancer.
The ride takes place 100 days from now. He's raised more than $2,000 toward his personal goal of $10,000.
You can learn more about the cause by clicking…

The Good Ol’ Boy Network (GOBN) of the car business limits us in how we apply experienced and/or capable people, how we run our dealership’s business, and in how we approach women in this business for everything from ownership, to manager spots, to sales positions. And, by doing all that, limits our success. And our profitability. Let me tell you my own experience with the…

Remember that girlfriend or boyfriend that was just too clingy for you? Insecure, always seeking approval, or going overboard in trying to make you happy? Or worse yet, one date, and the person treats the relationship as if you're married.
Apparently, Toyota has the same problem -- only it's the one in the relationship being overly clingy, according to Stanley Bing, columnist for Fortune magazine.
He recounts in his latest column,…

I was talking to someone that I don't particularly "know" in "real life". The conversation was over e-mail, and the only impression that he has ever gotten of me as been via e-mail. I feel like I portray myself as a confident, sassy, sarcastic, social media addict who has brains and doesn't take any BS.
...Yeah, he got that impression. But he worded it as being "Rough around the edges" and he was "Unable to really picture me with children."
This comment wasn't…

One of the best things we can do to prevent a poor performance month is to have strong margins in our fixed operations. If your overall parts department gross profit as a percentage of sales is below 35% place some attention to your margins. My suggestion is that parts gross profit margin to service customers is at 42%. Use of a parts matrix program might need to be used to achieve this result. I recommend a matrix…

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people… Continue

In real estate it is location, location, location. In the retail sales world, it is perception, perception, perception. Every one of your consumers wants to have a individualize experience when doing business with your organization. I like to call it the “Disney” experience since Disney has set the benchmark in customer service. It might be a…

Business has begun to pick up. You've lost some people due to the previous year's slow down. You've added a franchise. You want more coverage. All of these are legitimate reasons to begin a hiring campaign to add sales people to your team. But, other than the cost of advertising, are you prepared for the "real hidden cost" of hiring?
There are two directions to take when beginning a campaign. You can go for experience or you can train new salespeople in the style of…

Without spending too much time stuck on memory lane, I look back on some of the first cars I sold when I started in the business. There was a bill-of-sale, odometer statement for the trade-in, maybe a bank contract, and a buyers order. That was the entire paper process. You finished the deal by putting a stock tag on the trade (No FTC labels back then).
Within the year, there were added papers to verify that neither party tampered with the narrow gas tank h*** that was now standard…
