On Activation Engergy

I wish I could take credit for this, but I can't.

You know those days where you plan on getting up nice and early and taking a run in the park, the alarm goes off, and you think to yourself "Yeah, not going."

That same day you come home and you see the television remote in front of you and you think "Yeah, this is more like it".

Other than the relaxation factor, why is getting up and doing something productive harder than doing something non-productive?…

Telling Negative Nellie To Shut Up

We all have those moments of "This sucks", "Why am I doing this?", "This month is a waste", "Maybe I should just quit". It's human nature to doubt ourselves. Even the Dalai Lama has an internal negative nellie. I'd be willing tobet on it.

In those moments of self doubt, what do you do? Do you push through those feelings? Do you swallow them? Do you…

I Am Whatever You Say I Am - Branding In the Automotive Business

[as featured on CarChat24's blog]

We’re a live chat company. Just in case the name of the product (CarChat24) didn’t give it away, I just thought I’d state the obvious. What do you think about us?

Be honest.

Let’s say 100 people claimed we…

Social Media: Who's Your Audience?

Last night, I had the urge to blog. I didn't have a set topic in mind. I just knew I wanted to talk about the car biz. I didn't search the web for the newest, greatest news. I didn't crawl other automotive blogs to see what they were talking about. I simply wrote. It wasn't about our product. I didn't even mention the benefits of having Automotive Live Chat (even though, guys, totally worth it.) Social Media was on my mind so that's what I wrote about. It's what I know.

I…

What Do You Want?

I work in sales during the day. It's not car sales, (I know, right?!) but we do sell a service to folks who are interested. We get leads, they are called by the representatives.

I received an incoming call today from an angry student (I work at a bartending school), who was irate that we had withdrawn him from classes because he was out of time.

We spoke in circles:

Him: "I didn't know I was out of time"

Me: "Because you never called."

Him: "Well, if…

Life Lesson from Charlie Sheen

Are you tired of hearing about Charlie Sheen, yet?  I definitely am. I do have a confession to make: He was having a contest for someone to be his social media intern, and I applied. I made it to the 2nd round and then they canned me. I knew from the beginning that I probably wouldn't get the position. But I never thought that I couldn't.

In his famous interview where he drops his now branded words like "Tiger Blood" and "Winning", Charlie Sheen said something that was both head…

Crash, Burn, Recover - My Rise From A Layoff

I kind of fell into the automotive business. A friend of a friend had a position open in a BDC of a car dealer selling Suzuki and Isuzu. I left a collection agency where I was selling the idea of paying a bill to go to the automotive business where I was selling the idea of making and keeping an appointment to meet with a salesperson.

I started at the bottom, making phone calls to leads, setting appointments, tracking shows and sales. Then, we brought on a consultant who…

How a Brand New Phone Taught Me Tolerance

I hate people.

Okay, I don't., I work with people every single day, so part of me must enjoy them a bit. Truth be told, I often find it hard to tolerate people who speak slowly, or seemingly lack intelligence. I  dread the 10 phone calls a day that begin:

"Hey There, Katie Speaking, what can I do for you today?"

"Hi. I. Um...yeah...I was...um.... calling...to....I, Uh."

I feel my blood pressure rise in the moment the phone rings at this…

The Worst Job Interview I've Ever Had

This past week, I had the opportunity to go on an interview for a management position at a local automotive dealership. The location was perfectly convenient for me. What they were looking for was exactly what I can offer and then some I'm experienced in BDC management and marketing. I'm up to date on the latest Social Media strategies. The compensation was more than adequate. Everything seemed to be a perfect fit.

I was sitting in a delightful office over one of the best cups of… Continue

Coupons, Customer Service Surveys, and A Case Study (Oh, My!)

I have

a confession.

My name is Katie Colihan, and I ignore customer service surveys and coupons.

Hi Katie

Hi.

This stems from the fact that I love shopping, so I always get the register rewards. I never use them. I throw away money on a daily basis. Sometimes, on my "lucky" days, I get an opportunity to "Take a survey online and be entered in a contest to win a… Continue

A Lesson in Overcoming Fears and Objections: Featuring: A Mouse

This morning, I woke up to probably the most frightening thing that could ever happen. There was a mouse in my room at the house I'm currently living in with two roommates.

Even writing that sentence gives me hives and I'm so close to doing one of those Hollywood screams with real tears.

I quickly made a phone call to my father, (yes, a girl in her late 20's still calls her dad when there's a problem), and insisted that he come and help me pack a bag to satisfy me for an… Continue

A Case of the Mondays - A Lesson in Finding the Passion in your Job

Anyone else kind of slugging through the day? It's Monday in the East Coast (well, everywhere, I suppose), and it's hot. I'd like to be at the beach sipping on Gatorade and reading a raunchy novel. But, it's a work day for me.

5 years ago to the day, I was sitting in my cubicle, going through thousands of leads and sending them in for credit to our lead source vendors. 5 years ago, I was a manager/operations director of a BDC in New Jersey. The powers that be also… Continue
