When it comes to sales management training for vehicle sales, I’m reminded of a quote I recently read by John Wooden, “The best leadership tool you have is to lead by example.” Every day I see people bending the rules to fit their desires. For example, in my neighborhood I see people intentionally run stop signs. What bothers me is that many of these people have kids in their car. Those children are seeing their parents ignore the rules to get to their goal faster. I ask myself what kind of example are they setting?
In dealerships, sales managers have a priority to train, and the best way to train is to lead by example. As you coach your sales team, it’s important to show your integrity throughout the training process and in the day to day tasks.
Management should consider these tips to effectively lead by example:
1. Stay committed to the sales process and avoid short cuts.
2. Never use profanity.
3. Avoid negative comments about other employees, customers or supervisors.
4. Be aware of your treatment of other employees in every department.
5. Show dignity and respect to those sales members who are struggling.
6. Don’t only focus on hot prospects.
7. Be early for work.
8. Open the door for others
9. Be professional and polite in how you answer all calls.
10. Stay off social media at work.
11. Dress for success.
12. Keep the facility clean. Do your part.
13. Eat smart.
14. Be an expert at all of the skills that the salespeople are expected to excel in.
In conclusion, as a leader, it’s imperative that your examples are the most valuable thing your people will experience.
