Purchasing a used motor home is a great money-saving decision. However, to make the most of it you need to follow a few steps right after you bring home your rig from the dealer. Following are the five basic things that you must do.
Step One: Repair
The moment you become the owner of the RV, your first task will be taking it to a mechanic. It may have happened that you have got a good deal because the last owner didn’t repair some mechanical glitches in the RV. So let your mechanic take a good look at all the components to ensure the machine is running properly, and if necessary, carry out the required repairs. It is better if you do not skip this step because you don’t want your RV to breakdown in the middle of nowhere.
Step Two: Oil Change
Don’t take the words of your previous owner for granted, even if he says that the van has been through proper maintenance shortly. Just take the used RV to the gas station for an oil change immediately after buying it. It may have happened that the owner decided to keep a little bit of oil in the tank, so that the buyer can use it. Well, that is a good thought, but fresh oil is important for the proper running of your RV.
Step Three: Cleaning
If you are done with the mechanical part, it’s time to clean the RV. If the previous owner has done it already – you don’t have to worry about it. But it is still recommended to check each and every cupboard, accessory and the appliances you have received from the last owner. It’s time to give the RV a full bath. Do not restrict your cleaning activities only to the RV’s interior because the exterior of the RV also needs your attention. While this cleaning is under process, you will know if the vehicle has any loose panels or loose spots in the roof. Fix those problems before you start driving it. This is also a good time to explore all the parts of the RV and chalk out a décor plan for the rig.
Step Four: Sanitizing
Cleaning is not complete without sanitization. If the last owner has given away his carpet to you, it’s your decision if you want to keep it or throw it away. But if you think the carpet is usable, make sure you sanitize it before using. Use proper cleaning tools and chemicals designed for RV to get rid of the germs, especially from the toilet. Use disinfectants not only for the washroom, but for other remote corners of the van as well, because there are always chances of bugs residing in a used RV. Use fresh tissue paper, even if the one given by the previous owner is not used.
Step Five: Checking Wiring and Pipelines
Did you check all the electrical wiring and pipelines in your RV? Make sure you do that to avoid any obstruction. If you think, you can fix the problems all by yourself go ahead and do it because that would save you some dollars. But do not use any guesswork while repairing electric wirings or plumbing. Hire a professional to get rid of such issues.
Buying a used motor home is a great way to begin a life of adventure. Don’t be taken aback by the small adjustments that you may have to make to your rig after you receive it. These are nothing compared to fun-trips you are going to have and the money you are going to save first by not buying a brand-new model and next on hotel and travel charges.
