FIRST U.S. REGION CHAMPION IS CROWNED. TEXAS THROWS COMBINATION NO-HITTER TO WIN ITS WAY TO THE 2013 LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL® WORLD SERIES

The Southwest Region has its 2013 Little League Baseball® World Series Champion. Universal Little League from Corpus Christi, Texas, rolled into the region final in Waco, Texas, with consistent hitting and dominant pitching, and they displayed both in a 6-0 victory over Fairacres Little League from Las Cruces, N.M.

Texas pitchers, Jacob Garza and Jose Sosa combined for a no-hitter, as the team from Texas-West became the first Champion from the United States to win its way to the 2013 Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport, Pa.

On the mound and at the plate, Jacob Garza was dominant in the Championship Game on Wednesday, Aug. 7. In 5.1 innings, he did not allow a hit, struck out 11 and walked four. He helped his cause at the plate, going 3-3 with a home run and two runs scored. Sosa came in and secured the last two outs in the top of the sixth to complete the no-hitter for Universal.

Showing smart, aggressive base running, the team from Corpus Christi scattered their hits among seven players, scoring at least one run in four innings. They become the 20th team from Texas to advance to the Little League Baseball World Series, and the first from the city of Corpus Christi.

Fairacres Little League was only the second team from New Mexico to advance to the Southwest Region final. In the 67-year history of the Little League World Series, a team from New Mexico has only competed in the World Series once, in 1956.

Universal Little League, the Southwest Region Champion, went a perfect 3-0 in pool play, and edged out Arkansas in the semifinal to face the team from Las Cruces, N.M. in the championship game. They had a team batting average of .344 over their five-game region championship run. Learn more about the Southwest Region Tournament.

The Southwest Region Champion will face off against the representative from the Northwest Region in the first game in the U.S. bracket at the 2013 Little League Baseball World Series on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. at Lamade Stadium.
