Coupons, Customer Service Surveys, and A Case Study (Oh, My!)

This stems from the fact that I love shopping, so I always get the register rewards. I never use them. I throw away money on a daily basis. Sometimes, on my "lucky" days, I get an opportunity to "Take a survey online and be entered in a contest to win a $10,000 shopping spree!" I've entered a few times, but I've never won. I think I might have won a free cheeseburger at McDonalds.

As a growing member of the business and marketing industry, I constantly ask myself "What am I going to get out of it?" and "Is the investment of time really worth it?" with almost every opportunity that is thrown my way. Whether its a new job offer, or a chance to win a brand new Lexus. While I agree not using coupons, which are free and great opportunities to get often pricey things for a cheaper (or free) cost, is a waste of my own hard-earned money, I just have a hard time taking a risk and be entered in a contest that I probably won't win.

"You can't win if you don't play", is the response that I get from friends who I try to have this discussion with. While they're correct, they're also not thinking of the big picture. Why waste my time on something that isn't certain, when I can invest my time in something that is? As much as I hate coupons, they're a sure thing, unless they're expired.
