Do I Really Need To Fix That Dent In My Car?

No matter the season, finding dents on our cars are all too common. Maybe you backed up into a pole, maybe someone hit your door with theirs in the parking lot, or maybe you (or your new teenage driver) couldn’t stop quick enough at the red light and bumped bumpers with the car in front of you – it happens.

Despite why it’s there, we can all agree on one with – we hate finding dents in our cars and, even more so, we hate paying to have them fixed. But do you really need to fix the dent in your car?

We think you should.

Here are some of the reasons why we think it is in your (and your cars) best interest to have that dent taken care of.

  1. The Obvious – Dents Will Decrease the Vehicles Value

Of course this depends on a few factors, with the most important being how old your vehicle already is and what shape it would be in even if the dent were to be fixed.

If you’re driving a brand new, fully loaded, sparkly clean car – a dent is going to hit your vehicles value like a brick hitting a window. In this case, it would be in your best interest to repair the dent, restoring your new ride to its original glory.

If you’re rolling around in a $500 beater you picked up at auction that’s already home to a number of dents or scratches and makes a weird noise every time you turn it on… you would probably spend more fixing the car than what it’s even worth.

  1. A Dent Can Lead to Worse Problems

While a dent in itself is not really a hazard to your vehicle, if the dent is accompanied by a scratch that has penetrated the paint job, you’ve opened up a whole new can of worms.

With the sealant on the body of your vehicle compromised, your vehicle is more susceptible to the elements – water, salt, sunlight, etc. This exposure can quickly cause corrosion and rust on the body, and this rust will not stay put at the spot of impact. Rust can spread, and quickly, over the body of the vehicle and even internally, which will cause more problems than just being an eyesore.

  1. Do It For the Aesthetic

Your car is your baby – and you want your baby to look her best, don’t you?
