There’s an old story about two close friends who every weekend used to go out into the mountains near where they lived and hike trails and paths that weaved through the forest on the sides of the mountains. They had done this for many years and it was a part of the week that they both looked forward to with great anticipation. It was a great time for camaraderie and exercise, and an important part of their health regimen for staying in shape.
One day, while they were mid-way through their weekly hike, they noticed a large grizzly bear coming out of the woods that was rapidly pursuing them as they walked causally along the path. One of them began to panic at the sight of the bear and immediately pointed out to the other one that at the pace the bear was running, he would soon be upon them and noted how dangerous it was for both of them. The first hiker quickly took off his knapsack and pulled out a pair of running shoes and promptly started to put them on.
“What are you doing?” the other asked in a panic. “Don’t you know anything about grizzly bears? You can’t outrun one of them. We have a big problem here.”
To which the other calmly responded, “I don’t need to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun you!”
