Hey, I’m Not Getting What I Deserve, or Am I?

Do we truly get that which we focus on the most? Is “The Secret” true or a bunch of hocus pocus? What meaning does any of this have in our personal and business lives?

From Wikipedia; The Secret describes the law of attractionas a natural law that determines the complete order of the universe and of our personal lives through the process of “like attracts like.” That is, as we think and feel, a corresponding frequency is sent out into the universe that attracts back to us events and circumstances on that same frequency. For example, if you think angry thoughts and feel angry, you will attract back events and circumstances that cause you to feel more anger. Conversely, if you think and feel positively, you will attract back positive events and circumstances. The law claims that desirable outcomes such as health, wealth, and happiness can be attracted simply by changing one’s thoughts and feelings. It says that our thoughts are magnetic and they attract thoughts of similar frequency. Whatever thoughts we dwell upon, we attract similar thoughts in our life.

So here we go, I think it was Napoleon Hill that may have said it first “What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve” There are so many examples we can use here, The Wright brothers conceiving flight, believing in their thoughts and achieving them. Computers once the size of the state of Delaware now held in our hands. Henry Ford’s belief that everyone should be able to afford a car and the creation of the Assembly line. Space travel… yes we did land on the moon for you conspiracy folks reading this.

Does it hold true in smaller parts of our lives as well? “I feel like I’m coming down with something”, what happens next? You catch a cold. We pull into a mall, it’s raining cats and dogs and we are sure that we are going to be parking a mile away from the entrance, and sure enough, lot is full and we get soaked. A woman talking to her friends stating “ I must be a jerk magnet, if there is one within 1000 miles from me sure enough I’ll end up with him” A Salesperson halfway through their month says “Man the advertising isn’t working, inventory sucks, management doesn’t care about me, this month is going to be really bad” Sure enough, bad month appears. Manager complains “There isn’t any talent out there anymore, “what happened to the good old days when you could hire talent and people that wanted to make money” Well he ends up not finding any, just like he/she said.

We could go on for days and pages with examples but you get what I’m talking about. In our training classes for new automobile salespeople we talk about “Act as if” If you drag around the lot with your hands busied in your pockets, head down, bad thoughts zipping through your mind, grumpy, you will be a grump! Dale Carnegie said “To be enthusiastic you must act enthusiastic”…. sooo act as if you are a person or enthusiasm and that’s who you will become.

But is it all true or just training, “motivation” a way for people like me or consultant trainers to justify their fees?

I know this much I/we in my opinion have been given free will and that free will allows me/us to act in whatever way we want and those actions will indeed have consequences both good and not so good.

Ok, Craig I’m not sure I’m buying this law of attraction stuff, we get what we focus on, what we put out into the Universe etc, sounds like a bunch of New Age junk to me” How about what Jesus said in Mathew 21:22 “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer”

Does He mean that we can have anything like the “Law of Attraction” says?…I think not

That is not a guarantee that we can get ANYTHING we want merely by asking Jesus or believing or asking the “Universe” God wouldn’t give us something that would hurt us or others or that would violate his own nature or will. This isn’t a blank check to be filled in “I want to win the lottery, have the “perfect” mate, win salesperson of the month.. I think He means for things to be fulfilled they must be in line with God’s principles. I do think the stronger our beliefs the more likely our prayers will be in line with God’s will and then God will grant them.

Lockerd, you’re talking about God here and that makes me uncomfortable, I believe this or that etc. Whatever higher power than yourself that you believe in I would say these principles hold true.

Let’s take this discussion back to the car business. You wake up, you have a choice to make, are you go to work to work or going to work to kill time?

How about starting your day a few minutes earlier and take some quiet time, yes perhaps meditate if you are comfortable calling it that and for those that are so inclined ,prayer. See what you want,[conceive] think that is possible [believe] and then just go do it! [achieve] and IF it is in fact with His will, it will be received.

Typically we have no plan, we run late, we don’t think, we get dressed jump in the car, fly into a meeting and “start our engines” and usually when we start that way we get bad results.

What things do you do or would you like to do differently to start your day and perhaps attract a better life for you and your family and the dealership?

Thank you Bobby, and man you are spot on there is always something else, new to focus on...The key is to look at the glass half full deal.

A well known story (often used to motivate) is about two successful shoe salesmen from competing companies who were assigned to sell shoes in Africa.

The first shoe salesman headed into his new territory unsure what to expect. It was less than an hour of the shoe salesman’s arrival to Africa when he quickly phoned back to his headquarters and requested the first flight out, explaining to his boss, “This is a disaster! Nobody wears shoes!”

The second shoe salesman expected a challenge but was optimistic about this new opportunity. After a safe landing he quickly became thrilled at what he observed. He contacted headquarters and told his boss, “I can’t believe what I’m seeing, send stock a.s.a.p! Nobody wears shoes!”

Great post, Chief!  We HAVE to stay positive - our lives are full of self-fulfilling prophecies, and if we allow them to be negative we are doomed to misery.  Think about the good things in your life, count your blessings, pet the dog, take a bubble bath (ok, maybe not you guys, lol) - whatever you have to do to start your day on a positive note and keep it that way.
