Dealerships everywhere are looking for ways to cut themselves to a profit. Let me save you and your accounting team some time. The only way to change things is to start capturing more of the business you are loosing and generate traffic and sales for your dealership.
Sales
Even the best automotive salespeople close only 15% to 20% of the people they speak to in a given day or month. In addition most stores don't have a follow up process that works or more than one phone number to contact that customer. In addition the number they do have is usually the home number anyway.
Most salespeople in our experience don't want to make 50 to 100 calls a day to bring back customers that visited your dealership, and even if they did they don't know what to say anyway to motivate that customer.
You are paying for 100% of that traffic to visit your store; it makes no sense to write of the 80% to 85% who don't buy on their first visit.
Service
For years we have put up with small oil change and mechanic shops stealing our service customers. We justify it by saying they must be cheaper that our shop. The truth is we created the problem by not following up with our service customers and bringing them back to the dealership.
