Jim Ziegler Wants to know "Is it Time For the Retail Automotive Community to Rise Up and Give CarFax a TrueQuality Thumping?"

Enough is Enough!

Haven't you had it with all of these Data Pirates using our own customer information to defame us, lower our profits, alienate our customers... while at the same time they charge us through the nose to do us harm?

Among the worst of them in my opinion is CarFax. They even believe they have the right to price our cars and trades.... too low of course. While at the same time CarFax exploits negative stereotypes that we are crooks in every commercial the Little Car Fox Rats out the dishonest bumbling and inept idiot car sales person. They charge us to defame us.

read this article we just published in Wards Auto Magazine... "My latest article is out and it's hot.

Here are more than 250 Consumer Complaints and reviews about CarFax... look... http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/carfax_inacc.html

We have manufacturers supporting these people and requiring we do business with them. Let's get mobilized and scream at our factory representatives, reprint this article for your dealers, do press releases, and generally alert your State Dealer Associations and 20-groups.

If a consumer asks for the CarFax, tell them it's $39.00. Whoever told you it was free was lying.

I am available to perform 20-group and Dealer Association Keynote Speeches on this subject. As of right now, I am calling out the Tribe to get on this subject. JIM

You're right Jason, all of you know what they're doing isn't right. As an industry we all need to make individual decisions on what you can do to shut CarFax down in your own company in your own way. Personally, If I were a dealer I would weigh the liability and throw these people out of my DMS. They use our data to slander us. Cut off their access to our data.

Tell consumers Carfax is NOT Free like they told you. We'd be glad to pull CarFax for you for $25.00. I would tell consumers we find their reports to be unreliable and their pricing on the CarFax is unrealistic.

That is what I would anyway, your choices are up to you. Please post here any stories and accounts of bad experiences you've had, if any, concerning CarFax and Consumers.

Once I was offered pit passes to the CARFAX Nascar, while our dealership's bill was $15,000 a/month until we negotiated it in half.  I've often wondered just how much profits R.L. Polk & Co.  made to be able to sponsor NASCAR. I never did accept the NASCAR pit passes as it felt a bit cheap. There's nothing cheap or free about a CarFax.

Jim I have to say, I agree that dealers should give them the boot. I think the service is great but as a 19 year car guy it pains me to see them stereotype our industry as one filled with liars and idiots.

If dealers keep writing checks to carfax, I guess the commercials will be right about the latter because only a fool would pay someone to disgrace them publicly.

Thank you Jim!!! Worth noting (and raised as an issue recently) is that CarFax uses part of the protection money they charge for their mediocre but publicly trusted product to secure exclusive placement on AutoTrader, Cars.com, AolAutos and many other sites. In other words, they pay classified sites to exclude competition from other vehicle history report providers. Over time, CarFax has gone from respected data provider to high-priced extortionists.

You go Jim -- I dropped Carfax for the sole purpose that they attempt to make us car dealers all look like a bunch of bumbling idiot crooks.....I'm sorry, the disclaimer "go see a reputable dealer for your carfax today" does not even come close to cutting it.  They are NOT on our side, they are trying to make the buyer AND seller simultaneously dependent on their product.
