Siri is a virtual personal assistant that allows iPhone users to use their voice commands to operate their devices. This was first introduced with the launch of iPhone 4S and was believed to be the best Apple invention of the time. The application commonly personified as a ‘She’ has improved over time to include more features and improved functionality. The current version is more intelligent and gives the likes of Cortana from Microsoft and Now from Google stiff competition. When interacting with Siri, you give commands as you would in a conversation with another human and the application will use this to execute. On top of that, she can speak back to give feedback and seek clarification. She has access to all other applications and that includes contacts, mail, messages and search engines among others. To use her effectively, here are some secret commands you will need to know.
Take a selfies. The word Selfie does not exist in the English dictionary but people have used it to the extent that it has become a globally recognized word. The act of taking Selfies has been in existence since time immemorial, but it is only recently that a name was attached to it.
People love this kind of things, besides wearable technology, this is one of the best things Apple has to offer.
Siri is able to understand the command ‘Take a Selfie’ and the result is, the camera app opening and allowing you to change the orientation. This means that it is able to relate the word Selfie with camera and execute the command.
Displaying overhead flights. Thanks to Wolfram Alpha, Siri is able to detect the flights that are passing at that particular time just by typing the command.
The app scans your location and in a mysterious way produces a list of flights passing above you. This is a cool command that might not be all that useful but is fun to try out. This is new technology.
Get information from Twitter. Siri allows you to search Twitter in a jiffy and give you the results just by asking what you need.
It is able to connect a person’s name and their twitter handle such that you get the same results by searching either. Once queried, it displays the last 10 tweets and you can be able to expand if the one you are looking for is not among these.
Get directions instantly. While applications such as Google Maps and Apple Maps are not difficult to use, Siri makes them more efficient when it comes to seeking directions.
This is because the application can understand verbal commands which are obviously faster compared to typing. When giving the command, you can even give specific address without mentioning the City and Apple Maps will launch with the directions.
Get Movie’s Story-line. Siri is here to make life simple and interesting at the same time. It is able to provide information on that movie that has been released recently and you have not yet had the chance of watching, but curiosity is killing you.
Once the command has been keyed in, the story line will come up together with the movie’s score on rotten tomatoes and an option to either buy or rent from iTunes.
Get songs’ titles. When watching movies, it is a common thing to hear a song and want to listen to the whole of it later on. Shazam has been the life saver in this scenario but recently it has been cluttered by pop-ups and ads making it annoying.
Siri however, came to rescue this situation since you just need to ask her the title of the song that is playing and with the Shazam’s help Siri will display this and more information.
Activating Voice commands. It is possible to activate the voice commands from a distance just by saying ‘hey Siri’ even when you are away from your device. It has the capacity to record and recall the owner’s voice such that it will not take commands from any other person.
Activating loud speaker. This is an important feature especially when you need to make a call and both hands are occupied. The app with its voice recognition feature is able to detect your voice, lodge the call and put it on a loud speaker.
Reminder. Siri can work as a reminder and she is doing a good job on that as well. When the ‘remind me…’ the command is launched, she adds it to the file and even offers a link that redirects to the page.
This is a life saver especially to the very busy career people since it reads out the items once the time expires.
