I saw this great quote and had to share it with everyone. Our industry, Automotive, has had so many perception issues over the past 20+ years and we get really mad about most of the jokes right?

People say things like “that guy reminds me of a used car salesman” when they describe someone that they think is, well, less than honest.

For YEARS I would get so upset an debate these comments like “Hey, not everyone is like that stereotype from the 70′s movie….we’re people too…etc.”

Now, at nearly 38 years old I’ve realized a few things the biggest of which is this:

Selling cars make a bigger impact on more people’s lives than just about any other industry in the world.

By selling cars, we help someone experience happiness. That happiness gets shared with their family and friends because they go and show off that sweet new ride.

By selling cars, we employ so many people. In a time where people complain about lack of work and how hard it is to get a job, YOU – Mr. & Ms. Car Salesperson are providing jobs because the more you sell, the more that has to be made by the manufacturer.

We don’t just employ car people when we sell. Our sales mean that people have to make the metal to make the cars so they have a job because of you. Our sales mean that people have to transport the products to the facilities to make the metal and plastic and other people have to transport those parts to the places where other people ship them to the manufacturers who then have other people ship them to the dealership so your sales help employ truckers, train operators and more.

Truckers need to buy tires because they’re hauling things as a result of your sales so YOUR SALES help employ the people who make tires for the semi, and those semis need to be maintained and your sales help them drive more miles which helps employ the service technicians.

Those truckers who drive so many miles have to log those miles so they buy log books. YOUR sales help employ the people who make those log books.

Those log book providers have to buy the paper and ink so YOUR sales help employ the people who work in the paper mill, and the people who log the trees or work at the recycling plant to make that paper.

YOUR SALES mean more than you can ever know. You aren’t just bringing money to your home. You aren’t just making your manager, your dealer or your customer happy. You’re employing families all over the world….just because you sold a car.

The next time someone makes a joke about a car salesman, laugh with them. It’s ok because your sales are helping people enjoy a better quality of life.
