Why Should an Organization Train, Rinse and Repeat?

Military, Law Enforcement, Medical Professionals, Teachers…what do these occupations have in common?  Each provides a highly valued service to our local and global community at large and does so as a result of education and extensive on-going training.  As a result, society can depend on these individuals to protect humanity, face danger, save lives, educate our youth, improve health and welfare and do so at great sacrifice and without blinking an eye in the face of difficulties.

So why do corporate entities practice learning by osmosis and expect stellar outcomes similar to the well trained professional listed above?  Think about it!  If your were asked to perform the duties of a law enforcement officer,  military personnel, a medical care provider or a public school teacher with little or no instruction, training or preparation, how successful do you believe you would be at this task?  If someone were to just drop you into one of those roles and expect you to pick up all the necessary skills to save a life, educate a child or face certain danger by observation, how far would you blood pressure rise?

As much as the human brain has the capacity to be a sponge for knowledge, learning by osmosis is not a recipe for success, especially when the skill set needs to be as normal as the habit of breathing air.  So, why do so many organizations invest so much time and money into recruiting the right personnel, but drop the ball on their initial investment by not providing the fundamental education to perform the duties of the job?  Why do organizations continue to fall short of an expected ROI for recruiting by not providing on-going training to foster the growth of their personnel?  Is the vision of having a staff that handles the rigors of daily business life with a calm confidence that results from solid habits developed out of continuous training unsettling to management?

Invest in the education and on-going training of your staff.  This ounce of prevention will save you hours of clean up and recovery from turnover, poor customer service or failures in process which ultimately affects the bottom line.  A culture of well developed staff members will foster a climate for increase productivity, profits and growth.  Your business has an important role in the welfare of our global economy, as it could become the next revolutionary twist in the trade of commerce.

Marsh, thank you for your comment.  I agree.  It is hard work on both parties but the outcome far outweighs the oversight, which can become costly.  Rock on, Bandmate!!!

Stephanie, the sink or swim paradigm is out..the investment in each employee is HARD work...for both parties, but if an organization wants long term results stop making short-term withdrawls. Great, thought provoking post BandMate!

BC.....that made me giggle.  I too have had the same experience and as I have grown older, I have learned the hard lesson that there is always something else to learn.  We all are in the practice of life.....practicing over and over again as we strive for perfection.  Perfection is as elusive as a dream you can't remember once you wake up.  Thanks, Rockstar!!!!!

Stephanie- Train thru the pain, so they cannot complain. (They) are the employees and the customers they are servicing. I totally agree with you. Train people at never ending levels to PRODUCE, so companys' can have never ending growth. Have a great day.
