Thanks for the comment Jeff, I hope all is well at Inskeep Ford. I also enjoy both giving and receiving advise and helping people succeed, while learning more myself. This site has been a great spot for that.
I personally joined here to get advise and possibly give advise not for someone promoting their business. I dropped out of LinkeIn because of that. Nothing wrong with promoting your business, we all do that.
Not at all Scott, was a great post of yours. keep it coming. Thanks for the kudos on my "Point".
Uhhh...now I feel bad for using Jim Ziegler's name in the title of a blog post (just kidding again - I know my post wasn't self promoting). I get the point though. And a good one too, I might add.
Thanks Andrew for the comment. I enjoy your post. and I think Mike and I are not arguing so much as debating views. I am sure he is a great guy. I was not calling him out so much as I used that video as an example and feel bad that it seemed that way. We are all promoting in one way or another, I like your use of the words Shameless attempts... that is what I was driving at.
I have met Mike personally out here in "lil ol Lake City"... and he is a Very nice guy.
It really is a Very fine line. I see both points, the only way to put content on here and not inadvertantly "promote" yourself is to put up bad content....haha. Truly shamless promotion attempts on here will never rise to be very visible on the site, so the site somewhat self edits on that front.
The ad space is cheap! So for people that are only here to advertise, and not to build their "brand", that is clearly the way to go. Dealers are smart people... the best way to control this situation: Use that provided "PROMOTE" button once in awhile on the good stuff, and let the site do the rest
There has to be a balance...
Mike, I am sure you are a pretty nice guy and I think I am too. Let's agree to disagree on this :) I wish you much success as well.
I personally do not have the same feelings you do. I expect members here to be here only for the purpose of self promotion and/or to gleen useful information. I am here for both. I also expect that anyone freely giving useful information should be able to make it clear just who it is that is providing it "sponsored by".
In the Jackie Cooper video he is making a valid and legitimate point. I shared that and made it clear that I shared it as well as let any interested party know that what I do and what I offer is relevant to the message Jackie was delivering in that General Motors video.
A simple message to me would have enabled us to have an exchange of thoughts rather a public chastising.
The self promotion opportunity comment was meant to be funny/sarcastic.
I wish you the best and great success.
Mike, I am a smart enough man to say "well said" there is chocolate and vanilla Ice cream for a reason, but they are both ice cream in the end. Self Promotion is the same, Yes I am member because I am trying to Brand myself and get known. I however do not believe this is the place for blatant self promotion of products and services. I think is it s a place for two people to get to know each other that otherwise might have. I see your fine line and I respect it. I hope you see mine as well. And your comment about "thank you for the latest opportunity for self promotion?" I am sure that you know that was wrong to say and the people that read it will as well. Just As using Jackie Coopers name and legacy to promote ones video was as well. Just my feelings.... I may be wrong.
“Troy Spring, President of Dealer World shares his passionate thoughts on self promotion on the site dealerelite.net”
Thank you very much for this latest opportunity for self-promotion Troy.
I have posted several articles that are simple, pure content. Self-promotion is rampant in the world and particularly in this industry and specifically on this forum. In fact this site exists with the 7,000 members you site precisely because the developers of dealer elite shamelessly “self-promoted” it. They encourage members to promote the site for them with fairly regular (not too often) emails to that effect.
You stated you admired several posters to this forum and named several of the big names (self-promoters all).
Is your objection to obvious promotion or all types? Some of the people you refer to post profusely and many of those posts are announcements of their new books, additions to their software programs, television shows and appearances, apps they offer, giveaways, promote podcasts and lots more. Virtually all include links and addresses to websites on their blog postings, videos, etc. The very caption for this posting (at the top of my comment) “promotes” you and Dealer World.
It has been said anytime 2 people are talking, somebody is getting sold. Holds true on this site as well. Every post is selling an idea or thought to the reader/viewer. This industry is one in which self-promotion is part of the job description. Pick a trainer on this site and to a person they all advise sales people to actively promote themselves at every opportunity.
I have posted many times (I don't post a lot) just simple pure content. I have been featured (in fact the video you refer to was featured) and I have been in the top contributing members list as well. Here are links to some of those postings. None of them contains any type of promotion at all (not even in the tags).

Do you think this latest post of yours will get 500 views? Why would you want it to?
It seems to me it would be up to Dealer Elite to moderate and inform if something is deemed inappropriate (in this case the video was featured).
