What an awesome question to pose to the group Craig! So often a salesperson, service writer, or even manager will lie to a customer for so many different reasons, all of which are completely pointless. The old cliche "Honesty is the Best Policy" is certainly a tag-line we should all practice. Salesmanship is based on building trusted relationships. You cannot do that if deceit is involved through lying. My grandmother used to say..."Lying leads to stealing which leads to murder..." As drastic as it sounds it certainly made an impact!
This made me chuckle because i remember back when I first became a Christian a guy at church asked me "Joe, how can you be a Christian and still sell cars?" I laughed and said "contrary to popular belief, it is actually possible to sell cars without lying"........lol
Agree with every single word!

I know for me at times my first thought was....do I "lie" and tell people I do something else for a living?....lol...I didn't of course but for me I always felt the need to justify what I do for a living, So what can really be done at a dealership level to stop the lies?

Same experience for me Joe...I have been in the car business for 30 years and 25 of those years I have also served as the Director of Religious Education in my parish community. I have constantly defended my position in the car business...I call it the Apologetic of the Auto Industry. When people made the statement that working at a car dealership and being such a committed Christian didn't go together, I would inform them that my Christian beliefs were weaved into the very fabric of my secular life. At the car dealership, I practiced Christianity with every person I would meet as it was my focus and sincere desire to assist them with their transaction, practicing integrity, in a fair and honest way. As a result, I attracted numerous clients through my involvement in my parish.

Every day, in any business, we are presented with decisions, ideas and opportunities that we must filter through what we know would be pleasing or not to to God. To lie or not to lie -- I suppose to those who do not know the truth it can seem impossible or improbably that one can succeed and do so mightily and with total contentment by NOT lying, by being truthful, not only in commission but in lacking omission (telling the truth and the whole truth and not withholding fact that might be detrimental to us personally). We simply cannot do this right if we are still babes in the Word, if we cannot to some level discern truth from the lie....if we are not committed to grow daily in our walk to be more like Christ. I love everyone's comments here to this question. I sold cars in 2001 and know that honesty and candor DO build relationships, trust -- business, repeat business and referrals. Thanks everyone for your interaction on this Group. You are loved.
Thanks Jim

It is simple, they are not living in faith therefore greed or insecurities lead them to do whatever it takes to close the deal. Usually it starts small and grows into a nasty habit that keeps them from mastering real selling techniques that are honest and proven.
I would agree of course and I/we find it very frustrating to "sell" against a competitors lie....

Turn to Proverbs 25 (verse 11?) for an opposite and positive approach. A word fitly spoken is as apples of gold. I don't think that it's too much of a stretch to apply this in the context of automobile sales. If you truly address the buyers' desires, needs and concerns (speaking fit words) there's no need to misrepresent information for the sake of sales.
