What has to done to clean up the bad language in showrooms today.

Why have some Dealerships become the mens's Locker room. This

kind  showroom  behavior makes it very hard to attract and keep good people.

Also have we lost any customers due to what they heard.

What I think has to be done Joe, is zero tolerance from management. What I've seen over the years is that one, or a few of the better saleman get to do whatever they want. They usually have a little edge to them and they curse a lot. Because they sell the majority of the cars (20% of sales force sale 80% of the cars), management lets them get away with it. Of course we've lost customers due to what they've heard, I personally have had customers who i know were ready to make a purchase and then see salesman cursing and fighting on the showroom about who's up it is, make excuses not to buy and leave suddenly.
Jim, excellent information from you as usual... I am personally offended and will walk right out to the showroom and let them know this offends me... I do not spak that way and do not expect to hear that when I go to work! Great topic! Oh and Dan... I heard that hymn too...and when it was about me...It was changed to "Her...Her...."

It should come as no surprise that car dealers are a big target for harassment claims. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Acting Chairman Stuart J. Ishimaru said in a statement that "sexual harassment and sex discrimination against women in traditionally male-dominated industries, such as the auto industry, are still unfortunate realities." The EEOC has brought many successful six and seven figure harassment lawsuits against dealers.

Dan hit the nail on the head with his comment "Did they make a lot of money running that way? Yes. Did they lose a lot of money running that way? Yes".
I think that this is a universal issue across all lines of business. I know we're focused on the Automotive here, of course. From language in the BDC to language on the sales floor, I think common courtesy needs to be expressed, and reprimanding and a consequence system needs to be in place.

I wonder if a "Cursing Jar" would be too infantile. Then again, what kind if behavior is cursing in the first place?

I, for one, would not ask you to leave. I feel that I am here for the same reason you are: to learn a lot and to contribute a little when I can. My Christian faith is part of who I am. I do not turn it off at work, and on at church. You say that there is a right time and place for this expression, and I feel that it is always the right time to be genuine, sincere, and to reach out to others in kindness when given the opportunity to do so. In order to determine what is right or wrong, good or bad, true or untrue… There needs to be a trusted source that can be looked to for instruction. Our country was founded on the principles within this very book of instruction. I do not buy in to the oftentimes professed point of view that truth is determined by what you think or how you feel about something… Truth is absolute and timeless. Here's the way I see it: the results of this source of Truth being removed from the roots of our education system in 1962 is coming to fruition in the workplace. Therefore, what I said is applicable to this conversation.

The language and behavior issues extend far beyond cursing and unprofessional behavior.

I, for one, cringe when the Lord's name is used in vain in casual conversation, sometimes just retelling a story. I have told my co-workers that they might as well slap me across the face, because it has that same effect on me!

Secondly, offensive behavior can be found in body language and crude gestures. I have witnessed this type of behavior first hand and it is not confined to the male gender. An example of this would be found in the gawks and stares you may see in the showroom when an attractive client/customer/ vendor visits the dealership.

A strict zero tolerance policy must be in place and enforced in the dealership at every level. Signed records of acknowledgement should be maintained in the employees personnel files and if an employee is found in non-compliance proper actions must be made to address the concern. These measures may be written notice up to termination of employment. As soon as one person gets away with that behavior, the policy collapses and is 100% non-effective.

Again, must start at the top with strong leadership and this "strong leadership" must model by example.
Well personally I think it comes from frustration. In some peoples cases lack of vocabulary. The remainder of the foul language comes from bad habits people start with. I personally try not to use it in the showroom and by doing so slows up people that do excessively. (not that I never have) The other language is the car talk. I am sure we could all rattle off 50 or so. In the closed door offices is ok to a point but on the floor with customers listening we sound foolish, Funny I just watched a car ad on TV at the end they said the dealerships name and stated "where everyone rides" The public has no idea that they are trying to say everyone gets approved.
I despise that ad. I will call that dealer Monday and see if they want to do a mailer with more hooks than a tackle box.... Or some training. lol Night all. Good post Joe! Made me think.
